Former Deputy Prime Minister Sheila Copps endorses Michael Coteau in leadership race

Third-term Liberal MPP earns endorsement from former Hamilton MPP and MP

HAMILTON—Former Deputy Prime Minister and long-time MP and MPP for Hamilton, the Hon. Sheila Copps, today endorsed Ontario Liberal leadership candidate and third-term MPP, Michael Coteau.

“Now that we’ve all had a day to take down lawn signs and catch our breath after a thrilling federal election, we have got to defeat and replace Premier Doug Ford in 2022, and I believe Michael Coteau is the right person for the job. We need to make him Ontario Liberal Party leader and Premier!” Copps declared.

“The guy works incredibly hard. He campaigned for over half of our Ontario candidates in the federal election, bringing energy, a ‘happy warrior’ attitude and some serious skills door knocking. As Ontario Liberals, we’re electing a leader and future premier. We need someone bold, charismatic and relatable to go toe-to-toe with Doug Ford,” Copps added.

“Ford is not going to just defeat himself, so we need to up our game and make sure we have an inspiring leader who can offer a clear contrast. That’s what Coteau brings: here’s a guy who worked his way up in life—first person in his family to graduate high school and university, small-business owner, father, MPP, cabinet minister. He’s got what it takes.

“Plus, he’s got a seat in the Legislature and has never lost an election—he’s 6-and-0, as they say, and let me tell you: we need a winner now, more than ever,” Copps concluded.

“I’m honoured to have Sheila on our team as we continue to build a strong campaign all across the province, including here in Hamilton,” said Coteau, who tonight will attend a town-hall meeting in Dundas.

Copps joins a dedicated and growing team in the Hamilton-area supporting Michael Coteau, including former mayor Larry Di Ianni.
